From West Jones to Tybee: When Designers Move, They Don’t Just Pack Boxes — They Redesign Everything

When Broad Street Interiors’ own Joe Gallo (with partner and architect Tim Hall) decided it was time to trade their downtown Savannah townhome for island life, they didn’t just move — they made a statement. Savannah Magazinerecently featured their Tybee Island transformation, and let’s just say, this isn’t your typical beach house story.

Goodbye, Historic Charm. Hello, Salt Air and Space to Breathe.

Their West Jones Street home was the definition of Southern character — high ceilings, old soul, and plenty of foot traffic (literally, from tourists). But between the lack of privacy, no yard, and two dogs with big opinions, it was time for a change. So when Joe found a 1999 beach house on Tybee — sight unseen — he knew it was the next creative adventure.

The Makeover: Tybee, But Make It Moody.

Most people move to the beach and go full “coastal cottage.” Not Joe. The Broad Street Interiors touch meant deep, dramatic tones, layered textures, and an unapologetically sophisticated edge. Think Black Mamba granite countertops, herringbone floors, and seagrass wallpaper — all proof that beach houses don’t have to be beige.

Details That Tell a Story.

Every inch of the space says something.

  • A gallery of vintage cameras and framed moth photography nods to Joe’s collector spirit.

  • A matte black soaking tub and hand-installed wallpaper in the primary bath prove luxury and labor of love can coexist.

  • The screened porch — complete with fold-open glass doors — became the ultimate indoor-outdoor escape (and likely where design ideas are now born).

Curb Appeal with Character.

The exterior got its own Broad Street treatment, too — board-and-batten siding, a trellis-topped entry, and pineapple finials that greet guests with a wink to Southern hospitality.

Living Beautifully (and Actually Living In It).

At Broad Street Interiors, we believe great design should be lived in — dogs, guests, and all. Joe and Tim’s Tybee home embodies that balance: elevated, personal, and perfectly imperfect in the best way.
